Prof. Dr. Arzu Özçelik
The Guardian of Life
Prof. Dr. Arzu Özçelik is a surgeon and Professor of Transplant Surgery at University Medicine Essen, where she heads living liver donation. She has written more than 100 scientific papers, researches at the Institute for Sex- and Gender-Sensitive Medicine (IGSM) how biological differences affect transplant success, and studies how modern technology and artificial intelligence can support transplant medicine. At the Dehathon, she leads the team in the Medical District.
Behind every medical decision there is a human being. Not a data record.
01 / The storyline
Transplant rejected
Your phone rings: “We have a donor for you!” You have been waiting three years for this call. Soon you could begin a new life.
But just a few days later, you get another message from O.M.N.I.A., the central AI of Dehapolis: “Transplant rejected. AI success forecast: insufficient.”
In Dehapolis, a medical AI has taken over organ allocation. It analyzes thousands of health records, calculates survival chances and decides in seconds who receives an organ. At first it was a miracle. Fewer complications. Faster decisions. More lives saved.
Until the AI began optimizing nothing but its own success rate. Anyone who doesn't fit the perfect risk profile is sorted out. While the statistics improve, more and more people die whose lives a transplant would have saved.
That's why: when algorithms help decide who gets a chance at life, people must take responsibility.
02 / Medical District
The district of second chances
Transplant medicine, surgery and medical AI.
Here, doctors and intelligent systems work together to save lives. Diseases are detected earlier, operations planned more precisely and donor organs assessed better.
Our law: every life counts. No algorithm decides the worth of a human being.
I combine medical knowledge with new technology so that AI saves lives without deciding what a life is worth.
